By common consent, apprenticeships are seen to be the solution to the UK’s skills gap, from manufacturing and engineering to cyber security and software design.
Multiple articles and reports have been written on the subject and at Close Brothers we have conducted our own detailed research on the issue, interviewing around 1,000 SMEs across multiple sectors and regions.
A remarkable 82% of respondents are of the opinion that apprentices are the solution to addressing the UK’s skills gap, while 49% of business owners would take advantage of assistance offered by either the government or private sector.
At Close Brothers we help finance apprenticeship schemes in the engineering, manufacturing and transport sectors.
“The number of school leavers choosing apprenticeships over university has risen by over 20% since 2010,” said Neil. “For the industries we serve, this is clearly a positive development and for many, one of the main attractions of apprenticeships is the opportunity to earn while they learn and because the schemes are linked to businesses, in many cases it mean they are able to walk into a full-time job after they have finished.
